A cremino is a layered Italian chocolate, and Majani’s are the most famous of all. In these Limoncello dadi (“dice”) two outer layers of gianduja – the smooth Piedmontese blend of chocolate and hazelnut – sandwich a centre of chocolate and almond cream flavoured with limoncello from Pallini, the Roman liqueur house that makes it from Amalfi Coast lemon peel. With around a fifth almonds and a fifth hazelnuts, they are rich and nutty, with a clean citrus lift at the end. Each cube is individually wrapped.
Majani was established in Bologna in 1796 and is one of Italy’s oldest chocolate makers. It still makes its chocolate from the bean, and it is credited with Scorza, the first solid chocolate sold in Italy, in 1832. In 1911 Fiat held a competition among Italian chocolatiers to launch its new Tipo 4 car; Aldo Majani won it with a cremino of four alternating layers of hazelnut, almond and cocoa cream instead of the usual three, and the Cremino Fiat has been made ever since.
