A family recipe from Hawkshead Relish, and a short ingredient list: cranberries, Bramley apples, sugar and water, cooked down in open pans. The Bramleys soften the sharpness of the cranberries and give the sauce a fuller, fruitier body than cranberry alone, while keeping plenty of tartness to cut through rich meat. The jar is 220g.
Obvious with the Christmas turkey, but just as good with roast pork, gammon, game, a baked Camembert or a turkey and stuffing sandwich the day after.
Hawkshead Relish grew out of Mark and Maria Whitehead’s café in Hawkshead in 1999 and now makes more than 100 products near Esthwaite Water.
