Kolionasios are known for their traditional hand-wrapped baklava rolls – crisp layers of phyllo pastry, lightly sweetened and generously filled with nuts. This 350g pack brings together two of the best fillings, pistachio and almond, and makes a good-sized box for sharing over the holidays.
The business goes back to Nikos Kolionasios, born into a farming family near Lake Ioannina, who with his wife Xanthi ran a bakery in Athens that became known for its handmade baklava. They returned to Ioannina, a town with a baklava-making tradition going back some 400 years, to open their own atelier, and by the 1990s the family firm was leading the Greek baklava market. Today they hand-roll around 50,000 baklava rolls a day, and their daughter Athena, who took the business into export, still develops new recipes. They have won Great Taste Awards and iTQi Superior Taste Awards.
Serve with strong coffee – Greek coffee if you have it – or after Christmas dinner with a glass of sweet wine. Lovely with vanilla ice cream or thick Greek yoghurt too.
