Hawkshead Relish made this as a limited edition for the festive season, and it won a Great Taste 1-star award in 2025. It is a rich, dark chutney with a lot going on: onions slow cooked with sultanas, raisins, cranberries, dried apricots, dates and glacé cherries, sherry and balsamic vinegar, deepened with black treacle and brown sugar and lifted with stem ginger, orange juice and zest, nutmeg, cinnamon and black pepper.
Grande Couture is the larger size of Hawkshead’s Couture range, which comes in Italian-style jars and makes a smart present. Put it at the centre of the Christmas cheeseboard, or serve it with cold turkey and ham on Boxing Day and with a good pork pie.
Hawkshead Relish was started in 1999 by Mark and Maria Whitehead, who made relishes and chutneys for the café they ran in Hawkshead. After foot and mouth emptied the Lakes of visitors in 2001, the chutneys became the business. More than 100 products are now made by hand in open pans in a 16th-century barn by Esthwaite Water, and the company has won more than 60 Great Taste Awards.
