A rich, dark and sticky chutney from Hawkshead Relish. Figs make up 22% of the jar, cooked slowly with onions, brown sugar, raisins and a little garlic in vinegar, and warmed through with cinnamon. It is sweet and deeply fruity, with just enough spice to go with savoury food. A 210g jar.
It is very versatile. Serve it with cheese and with game, or try stuffing a pheasant breast with goat’s cheese and a teaspoon of the chutney before roasting. Hawkshead suggest it in a feta and spinach tart, or warmed through with orange juice as a quick sauce for roast duck. It also makes a very good sausage butty.
Hawkshead Relish was started in 1999 by Mark and Maria Whitehead, who made relishes and chutneys for the café they ran in the village of Hawkshead. When foot and mouth emptied the Lakes of visitors in 2001, the chutneys became the business. Today they make more than 100 products by hand in open pans near Esthwaite Water, and have won more than 60 Great Taste Awards.
