Chocolate umbrellas are a childhood favourite all over Spain. This Christmas version is 35g of Simón Coll milk chocolate, with at least 32% cocoa, wrapped in foil decorated with Father Christmas and reindeer. The makers intend them as edible decorations for the tree, and they use natural ingredients with no artificial additives.
Simón Coll is one of Spain’s oldest chocolate makers. Simón Mestres, the son of winemakers, started making chocolate in 1840 in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, the cava town in the Penedès just outside Barcelona, and the company is now run by the sixth generation of the family, with Maria Coll as chief executive. In 1972 they took over Chocolate Amatller, the Barcelona brand founded in 1797, and their Espai Xocolata in Sant Sadurní is a museum and visitor centre dedicated to cocoa and chocolate.
