Mendiants are a traditional Christmas sweet in France and Belgium – thin discs of chocolate studded with nuts and dried fruit. This 125g pack from Carline mixes white and milk chocolate discs, topped with roasted nuts and fruit, so you get the crunch of the nuts and a chewy, fruity note against the creamy chocolate.
Carline was founded in 1980 in Roeselare, just south of Bruges, by Carlos Noppe and his wife Cathy Lingier – the name is a blend of theirs. The next generation, led by their son Kristof, took over in 2002, and the company has since become one of the leading chocolate and marzipan makers in Flanders. They make their chocolate couvertures to their own recipes using only pure cocoa butter and natural vanilla, and still make many of their pralines and truffles by hand.
Put them out with coffee over Christmas, add them to a cheeseboard, or give the pack as a small, easy present.
