Quaranta’s soft nougat cakes are big, round cakes of soft torrone, sold here as a generous individually wrapped 165g slice. The tropical fruit version is a colourful one: honey-sweetened soft nougat, made with egg white and set on a thin wafer, studded with candied cherries, dried pineapple and dried papaya, plus toasted almonds and hazelnuts. The fruit keeps it moist and chewy and brings a bright, sweet-sharp note to the honey and nuts. There is no palm oil in it.
Quaranta is a family nougat maker founded in 1924 in Caravaggio, near Bergamo in Lombardy, not far from Milan, and still works from the recipe of its founder Antonio Quaranta. The company celebrated its centenary in 2024, and is known for its soft torrone, which is lighter and more yielding than the hard, snappy kind.
Slice it thinly to go with coffee or a glass of dessert wine after dinner, or wrap it up as a stocking filler for anyone with a sweet tooth.
Gluten free and suitable for vegetarians. Contains almonds, hazelnuts and egg. May contain other nuts, peanuts, milk, soya and sesame.
