Marzipan fruits are one of the great old-fashioned Christmas sweets, and Maffren still make theirs the traditional way. Each fruit is shaped from almond paste made with 33% almonds and French sugar, then painted by hand and given a light glaze so it shines. The almond content is what matters here – they taste of almonds first and sugar second, with a soft, fine texture. This 170g box comes as a small wooden-style crate of assorted fruits, which makes a pretty gift on its own.
Maffren was founded after the war, in 1945, by Daniel Maffren. In the 1980s the business settled in a former chocolate factory in the village of Le Poët in the Hautes-Alpes, and took over the almond paste maker Verger du Roy and the Confiserie des Alpes brand. They make calissons, nougat, caramels and almond paste, and hold the French government’s Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label for heritage craft businesses.
Put them out with coffee and the Christmas cake, or give them to someone who remembers marzipan fruits from their grandparents’ sideboard.
