A simple, well-made wholegrain mustard from Hawkshead Relish: whole mustard seeds (40% of the jar) blended with honey (20%), water and vinegar. The honey rounds off the heat of the seeds so it is sweet and savoury at once, with a pleasing pop of texture. This is the 210g Grande Couture jar.
Brush it over a gammon before it goes in the oven, stir it into a dressing or a creamy sauce for pork or chicken, or spread it in a ham or cheese sandwich. It is also lovely with sausages and cold cuts on Boxing Day. The Italian-style Couture jar looks good on the table and makes an easy present.
Hawkshead Relish was started in 1999 by Mark and Maria Whitehead, who made relishes and chutneys for the café they ran in the village of Hawkshead. When foot and mouth emptied the Lakes of visitors in 2001, the chutneys became the business. Today they make more than 100 products by hand in open pans near Esthwaite Water, and have won more than 60 Great Taste Awards.
