A simple, grown-up marmalade: Seville oranges, sugar, water and a good dram of whisky, which makes up 4% of the jar. Seville oranges make up more than a third, giving a proper bitter-orange marmalade with a warmth from the whisky that lingers on the palate, although only a trace of alcohol remains. It won Gold at the World’s Original Marmalade Awards in 2012. The jar is 230g.
Thick on toast on Christmas morning, stirred into a glaze for a ham, or baked into a marmalade loaf or bread and butter pudding. A good present for a whisky drinker.
Hawkshead Relish was founded in 1999 by Mark and Maria Whitehead, who made preserves for their café in the Lake District village of Hawkshead and turned them into the business after foot and mouth kept the visitors away in 2001. More than 100 products are now made by hand in open pans beside Esthwaite Water, and both founders hold MBEs.
