These are Scandinavian-style truffles: a creamy, soft centre made with cocoa and coconut fat, flavoured with chilli and rolled in cocoa powder, so they melt almost as soon as they hit your tongue. The cocoa comes through first, followed by a slow, gentle warmth from the chilli. Each 200g box holds around 20 to 22 truffles.
La Praline began in 2001 as a chocolate shop in the Linné district of Gothenburg, run by Jean-Claude and Katharina Eggel. After ten years of selling other people’s chocolate, they started making truffles themselves in 2011, and they say they are the only company in Scandinavia producing their own truffles. It is still a small family business – their daughter Natascha looks after marketing – and production moved to a modern kitchen in Viared, Borås, in 2019.
A good box to put out with coffee after Christmas dinner, or to give to someone who likes their chocolate with a bit of a kick.
