Hawkshead Relish’s Bloody Mary Chutney takes the flavours of the brunch cocktail and turns them into a proper chutney. Tomatoes are cooked down with celery, onions and apples in white wine vinegar, spiked with vodka and red chillies, and given the savoury, tangy depth of a Worcestershire-style sauce through tamarind, treacle, balsamic vinegar and spices including coriander seed, cloves, ginger, black pepper and cayenne. It is rich and tomatoey, with a warm kick. This is the 230g Grande Couture jar.
Spoon it on top of a burger, into a cheese toastie or alongside sausages, or stir a few tablespoons into a homemade tomato soup. It is very good with a sharp Cheddar too. The Italian-style Couture jar makes it an easy present.
Hawkshead Relish was started in 1999 by Mark and Maria Whitehead, who made relishes and chutneys for the café they ran in the village of Hawkshead. When foot and mouth emptied the Lakes of visitors in 2001, the chutneys became the business. Today they make more than 100 products by hand in open pans near Esthwaite Water, and have won more than 60 Great Taste Awards.
