Mauro 2019, Tierra de Castilla

The wine-maker is Mariano Garcia (he of the creator of the first Vega Sicilia).  An administrative mix up left the vineyards of Bodegas Mauro out of the Ribera del Duero D.O.  But this beauty of a blend of 90% Tempranillo and 15% Syrah (and some others Mariano does not tell us about) is every bit a stonking Ribera del Duero and available at a fraction of the price being non D.O. Plus, it’s organic, too.

With bright red fruit, the nose and palate are characteristically refined and there’s pleasing underlying minerality and spice.  On the nose, light perfume of blackberries, violets and cherries. On the palate, dark red fruits, light spice and vanilla.

At 14.5%, the tannins are firm but quite restrained which bodes well for short term ageing and will drink superbly to 2030. Benefitting from 15 months in a mix of American and French oak. Very limited supply of this, when it’s gone (we have 18 bottles), that’s it!
